Mary Elmes: One of our own-born in Ballintemple in 1908.

The Exhibition of Mary Elmes life is at present in the Library in Bishopstown in the Wilton Centre. It includes a full documentary on her life including details of the Spanish Civil War and the Holocaust Concentration Camps and the children she saved, God rest her. She was an extraordinary woman and was offered the French Legion of Honour Accolade, which she declined.

Mary Elmes was a very modest person; the Jews offered her their highest honour, Righteous Among the Nations, which she also declined;  but which her family posthumously accepted in 2014 and she also became the first and only Irish Citizen to be named Righteous Among the Nations. Mary is also know as the Irish Oscar Schindler. As you are no doubt aware, our New Bridge which was officially opened on the 27th September last, has been named after her. There is a great opportunity therefore for us all to lean more about this remarkable woman ‘Mary Elmes ONE OF OUR OWN’ at the exhibition in the BISHOPSTOWN LIBRARY, which continues until the 29th January 2020.
